Description : The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world and is named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico, where it was discovered in 1850. Some academics believe the Chihuahua to be descended from Chinese hairless dogs—who may have crossed over from Asia to Alaska on a land bridge before continental separation created the Bering Strait—and bred with the ancient Toltec and Aztec Techichi dog, creating the modern-day Chihuahua.

CHIHUAHUA CALENDARS

The American Kennel Club registered its first Chihuahua in 1905. Chihuahuas are very intelligent. Chihuahua's are strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very attached to their owners, even to the point of jealousy. Puppies are so small they can fit in your hand easily. Most breeders recommend adopting a Chihuahua puppy between the ages of 4 - 12 months as they will be more mature and agile and not so apt for injury.

Breed Group : Toy

Weight : Chihuahuas range from two to six pounds.

Height : 6 - 9 inches

Color : Any color - Colors include fawn, sand, chestnut, silver and steel blue, but any color is accepted, including black & tan and parti-color.

Coat : The Chihuahua coat comes in two varieties, The Smooth and Long coat. Short haired Chihuahua should be brushed gently or wiped with a damp cloth. The long haired Chihuahua should be brushed daily with a soft bristle brush.

Temperament : The Chihuahua is an excellent companion and a highly devoted breed. The Chihuahua is by nature gentle, loving, and sweet-tempered.  Reserved when it comes to strangers, the Chihuahua makes a good watch dog. The Chihuahua is known as a stay-at-home dog and gets along well with other household pets.  They are wary of strangers and make excellent watchdogs.

Health :
The Chihuahua is susceptible to patella luxation and eye problems and heart disease. The Chihuahua does not tolerate cold climates and must be protected when taken outside.

Life Expectancy : The expected life span of the Chihuahua is between 15-18 or more years.

Living Environment : Chihuahuas are adequate for apartment living, though they tend to be noisy. Chihuahuas need little exercise to remain happy and a couple of trips outside each day will provide ample exercise for this playful breed. However, they greatly enjoy going with their owners and benefit from daily walks.

Recognition : CKC, FCI, AKC, UKC, KCGB, CKC, ANKC, NKC, NZKC, APRI, ACR
